HOW TO MEASURE IT

1Lie down with the leg straight and relaxed.
2Sweep upward along the inside of the knee two or three times, toward the hip.
3Sweep immediately downward along the outside of the knee, toward the ankle.
4Watch the inside of the knee for a wave of fluid, and grade what you see.

The sweep is described this way in a published ACI clinical practice guideline, which also states that the grading table it uses is adapted from a 2009 physical therapy paper rather than original to it.
